3K vs 6K vs 12K Carbon Fiber Braided Sleeves: Tow Size and Product Selection

A buyer asks for a 3K carbon fiber sleeve. The next question should be: for what installed diameter? The K designation describes the nominal filament count in a carbon tow; it does not specify a finished sleeve diameter, thickness or the strength of a cured tube. Those depend on the whole braid construction and the laminate made from it.

Carbon Fiber Braided Sleeves

Read the model, not just the K number

The BSTFLEX Carbon Fiber Braided Sleeves catalogue includes multiple 3K, 6K and 12K models and one listed 24K model. Each entry also gives a spindle count, a nominal diameter range and a nominal linear mass in grams per metre. For example, the published 3K20 entry has a 20–40 mm range and 20 g/m linear mass, while the published 6K39 entry has a 30–50 mm range and 39 g/m linear mass. These are different constructions and fit ranges; the numbers cannot be used as an isolated strength comparison.

Linear mass refers to dry braid mass per unit length in the stated catalogue condition. It is not the cured laminate's areal weight, wall thickness or fiber volume fraction. Once a sleeve is opened or pulled onto a part, its fitted length and coverage can change. If a drawing calls out an areal weight or finished wall, ask how that requirement should be measured on the intended geometry.

What changes as the tow gets larger?

A larger tow contains more carbon filaments per bundle, but tow size is only one variable. The number of yarn carriers, braid angle, tension and installed diameter also influence the braid's appearance and coverage. A finer-looking surface may be useful for one design; a heavier construction may be specified for another. Neither choice replaces testing of the finished composite.

Compare candidates at the part's installed diameter. Inspect how evenly the yarns cover straight sections and transitions, whether the braid has to be stretched excessively to pass a shoulder, and whether the chosen resin wets the construction under the actual process. A sleeve that fits mechanically but leaves unwanted gaps on a taper may require another model.

Carbon Fiber Braided Sleeves

A practical order of selection

  1. Record the minimum and maximum outside diameters the sleeve will occupy.
  2. Shortlist models whose published diameter range covers the part, including the installation path.
  3. Compare tow size, spindle count and nominal linear mass within those shortlisted models.
  4. Fit samples to the actual mandrel and document coverage, fiber angle and cut length.
  5. Confirm resin compatibility, processing method and laminate test requirements before approving production.

If a customer specifies '12K' solely because it sounds heavier, this sequence often reveals the missing information. A 12K braid must still fit the tool and deliver the required fiber architecture. Conversely, a 3K sleeve is not automatically too light for every job. The correct comparison belongs to a defined part, not a label.

Send enough information for a useful quote

Include the drawing or mandrel dimensions, desired reinforcement length, resin and process, requested tow size if known, quantity and any controlled tolerance. Ask BSTFLEX to confirm the current catalogue values and available models before the specifications are used on a purchase order. The complete product table is the reference for the published 3K, 6K, 12K and 24K options.
