Welding Blanket Size Guide: 6x6, 6x8, 8x8, 10x10, Grommets and Custom Sizes

Oct 03,2026

A welding blanket can be large enough on a purchase order and still leave part of the equipment exposed after installation. Fabric used for side drops, overlaps and folds is no longer available to cover the main surface. Hems and seams can also make a nominal size different from the finished dimensions.

This welding blanket size guide compares 6x6, 6x8, 8x8 and 10x10 ft formats, then explains how to specify the finished size and grommet layout for your installation.

BSTFLEX manufactures industrial welding blankets in these dimensions and other custom sizes. The four sizes below are reference formats, not the limits of our manufacturing range. Send the dimensions your application requires rather than changing the installation to fit a short list of sizes.

Welding Blanket Size Chart: 6x6, 6x8, 8x8 and 10x10 ft

In this guide, 6x6 means 6 feet by 6 feet, not 6 inches or 6 meters. The metric figures below are exact conversions of the stated dimensions; they are not manufacturing tolerances or a guarantee of finished size for an unspecified product.

Size Reference Dimensions in Inches Dimensions in Millimeters Flat Area
6x6 ft welding blanket 72 x 72 in 1828.8 x 1828.8 mm 36 sq ft
6x8 ft welding blanket 72 x 96 in 1828.8 x 2438.4 mm 48 sq ft
8x8 ft welding blanket 96 x 96 in 2438.4 x 2438.4 mm 64 sq ft
10x10 ft welding blanket 120 x 120 in 3048 x 3048 mm 100 sq ft
Custom welding blanket Specify required width and length Manufactured to agreed dimensions Depends on the approved size

A 1800 x 1800 mm blanket is not exactly the same size as a 6x6 ft blanket. Likewise, 3000 x 3000 mm is smaller than 10x10 ft. Use one controlling unit on the order and identify any converted dimensions as reference values.

Choosing Between 6x6 and 6x8

A 6x8 welding blanket adds two feet in one direction compared with a 6x6 blanket. That extra length can be allocated to a longer covered surface or a greater hanging drop, depending on the layout. It does not increase both dimensions.

For a rectangular hanging panel, mark which edge is the top. A panel measuring 6 ft wide by 8 ft high needs a different attachment layout from one installed 8 ft wide by 6 ft high, even though both use the same area of fabric.

Choosing Between 8x8 and 10x10

An 8x8 welding blanket has 64 square feet of flat area; a 10x10 has 100 square feet. The larger format provides more material for coverage, but also increases fabric weight when the construction is otherwise identical.

Before selecting the larger panel, check the available support, access for installation and how the blanket will be removed and stored. A larger size does not, by itself, provide a higher temperature rating or establish suitability for heavier spatter.

Specify Finished Dimensions After Hemming

Three measurements need to be kept separate: the fabric cut size, the finished blanket size and the coverage remaining after installation.

Cut size is the material dimension before sewing. Finished size is the outside dimension after hems and seams are completed. Installed coverage is what remains available after the blanket is draped, overlapped or attached.

For example, our silica fabric welding blanket page notes that hems and seams reduce the finished dimensions relative to the nominal starting size. For a new custom order, identify the final dimensions you need and ask for confirmation of the cutting allowance and finished-size tolerance.

A clear instruction is: Finished blanket dimensions required: 2000 mm wide x 3000 mm long after hemming and sewing. Confirm the manufacturing tolerance before production.

This is more precise than ordering a 2 x 3 blanket without stating the unit or whether the dimensions apply before or after fabrication.

Measure the Installation, Not Just the Object

For a Hanging Panel

Record the required covered width and vertical drop, then identify the support positions. Include the relationship between the support line, grommet centers and finished blanket edges. A frame's outside dimensions alone may not describe the panel that fits inside it.

Where panels meet, account for the planned overlap. Identify any openings around pipes, cables or structural members so that the attachment arrangement can be reviewed with the coverage requirement.

For a Draped Equipment Cover

Measure along the intended fabric path, including raised sections and side drops. A measurement taken only across the top of the equipment does not include the fabric needed to reach down its sides.

For irregular equipment, provide photographs and a marked sketch. Show which surfaces require coverage and where the blanket must remain clear of moving parts, ventilation openings or service access points.

For Adjacent Blankets

Adding the widths printed on several blankets overstates the installed coverage when their edges overlap. For flat panels, the combined covered width is the sum of their finished widths minus the total overlap between them. Folds and changes in direction consume additional material.

Do not use a fixed overlap allowance as proof of adequate spark containment. The work location, particle path, openings and installation method need to be assessed for the actual hot-work operation.

Welding Blankets with Grommets: What to Put on the Drawing

Ordering a welding blanket with grommets is only part of the specification. The hole layout must match the installation. A blanket intended to hang from its top edge may need a different arrangement from a panel secured around its perimeter.

Grommet Detail What the Buyer Should Specify
Position Top edge, selected edges, corners or all four sides; identify the installed orientation
Inside diameter Required clear opening to suit the selected attachment hardware
Spacing Center-to-center pitch, maximum pitch or individually dimensioned hole locations
Edge offset Distance from each grommet center to the finished fabric edge
Reinforcement Hem and local reinforcement requirements for review with the chosen fabric
Hardware material Requested metal and relevant heat, moisture or corrosion conditions

Where an existing frame has fixed attachment points, send their coordinates or a dimensioned sketch. Do not assume that evenly spaced holes will align with the frame.

Grommet Spacing: Maximum Pitch or Exact Locations?

These instructions are different. Maximum pitch allows the manufacturer to distribute the holes while keeping each interval below an agreed limit. Exact locations require the hole centers to match a drawing.

State how the corners should be handled and confirm the total number of holes. When a pitch does not divide evenly into an edge, the drawing should show how the remaining distance is distributed.

Keep the units consistent here as well. An 18-inch pitch equals 457.2 mm, not 450 mm. The difference matters when the blanket must fit existing hardware.

Grommets are attachment features, not lifting points for equipment. The fabric, reinforcement, fasteners and support structure must be considered together; adding more holes does not establish a safe load rating.

Large and Custom Welding Blanket Sizes

BSTFLEX can manufacture welding blankets in dimensions other than 6x6, 6x8, 8x8 and 10x10 ft. Requirements can include smaller panels, long rectangular blankets, replacement panels for existing installations and larger equipment covers.

For example, a buyer can specify a finished 1500 x 2500 mm panel or a 2000 x 3000 mm blanket instead of selecting the nearest imperial format. Dimensions, tolerances and attachment details should be agreed together.

Large blankets may require joined fabric panels, depending on the usable width of the selected material. State whether seams are acceptable and identify any locations where a seam would interfere with the installation. A custom overall size does not necessarily mean a seamless, single-width construction.

For shaped panels, access openings or cutouts, send a drawing for construction review. For repeat OEM orders, use an approved drawing revision so that replacement blankets retain the same dimensions and hole pattern.

Match the Size to the Material and Duty

Dimensions define the geometry, not the protection level. Select the material and finished construction for the exposure before finalizing a size and attachment layout.

Material Option What to Confirm Alongside the Size
Heat-cleaned fiberglass or acrylic coated fiberglass Fabric weight, edge finish and whether the selected grade is suitable for the intended installation position
Silica fabric Fabric grade, weight, seam arrangement and the finished dimensions after fabrication
Silicone coated fiberglass or silicone coated silica Coating and substrate service limits, handling requirements and reinforcement around attachment points
Aluminized fiberglass Which surface faces the radiant heat source and whether the proposed exposure includes direct spatter
Carbon fiber felt Thickness, drape requirements and a suitable support or edge construction for the selected felt

For the differences between these constructions, read our welding blanket materials guide. For continuous exposure, coating limits and installation position, see high temperature welding blanket ratings and selection.

Do not assume that a blanket intended for vertical spark interception is suitable for horizontal slag collection. Likewise, a large blanket is not a substitute for removing combustible materials, assessing concealed openings, maintaining ventilation or applying the site's hot-work procedures. Do not treat an ordinary welding blanket as certified eye protection against welding arc radiation.

Example Specification for a Custom Welding Blanket

The following is an illustrative purchasing specification, not a tested product configuration or a recommendation for a particular welding process.

Item Example Order Requirement
Finished dimensions 2000 mm wide x 3000 mm high after hemming and sewing
Size tolerance Supplier to state; buyer to approve before production
Orientation Vertical panel; the 2000 mm edge is the top
Material To be selected after review of the process, heat exposure and spatter conditions
Edge finish Reinforced hems; construction to be confirmed with the selected material
Grommets Locations, clear opening and edge offsets to follow an approved attachment drawing
Seams Supplier to show any proposed panel joins for approval
Quantity and packaging Buyer to state order quantity, repeat demand and individual packaging requirements

Include a photograph or sketch of the installation and describe the welding, cutting or grinding operation. This gives the supplier both the dimensional requirement and the operating context needed to review it.

Questions About Welding Blanket Sizes

Can BSTFLEX supply sizes other than 6x6, 6x8, 8x8 and 10x10?

Yes. Other welding blanket sizes can be custom manufactured. Specify the required finished width and length in feet, inches or millimeters, together with the material and attachment requirements.

Is a 6x6 welding blanket always 72 x 72 inches after sewing?

Not necessarily. A nominal size may refer to the fabric before hems and seams are completed. Ask whether the quoted size is cut size or finished size, and confirm the finished dimensions and tolerance on the order.

Can I order a welding blanket without grommets?

Yes. BSTFLEX offers constructions without grommets as well as custom attachment arrangements. State how the blanket will be placed or secured so that the edge finish can be specified accordingly.

What is the correct grommet spacing?

It depends on the attachment layout and finished blanket construction. For an existing frame, provide the actual fixing-point locations. For a new installation, agree the support arrangement, hole spacing and reinforcement before manufacture.

Can I cut a larger blanket down to size?

Cutting a finished blanket can remove its hems, reinforcement or attachment points and may leave an edge that needs further finishing. Specify the required finished dimensions at the ordering stage, or obtain material-specific fabrication instructions before modifying a blanket.

Does a 10x10 blanket provide better heat protection than a 6x6?

It provides more flat area, not an automatically higher protection level. Thermal and spatter performance depend on the selected material, construction and exposure conditions.
